Samara Private Game Reserve Great Karoo, South Africa This spectacular private reserve, forged from 11 rundown farmsteads fringed by mountains in the Eastern Cape’s remote, malaria-free Great Karoo, offers a luxurious, intimate safari experience for families. With conservation at its heart, the reserve is home to the highly endangered cheetah, as well as leopards, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, white rhinos and more.
The managers, Marnus and Anneke Ochse, welcome families, who stay in either the elegant Karoo Lodge or the exclusive-use Manor House. Samara offers children bush walks and sleep-outs under the stars, as well as lessons in navigation and setting up camp, plus more conventional activities such as football, tennis, table tennis and croquet.
This allows parents to go off on longer game drives or to have time on their own. There are also dedicated babysitters, and menus are tailor-made to suit each family.
